A great idea!
Ok, you want build a new school to attract more families like Madison. Let's say you do that and it works, then you have a very large high school like Bob Jones was in Madison. What did they do? They built a new and separate high school. Look, do not combine the two, either build one for Austin or Decatur. Build a new middle school in the SE and shut down Brookhaven and send those kids to the Cedar Ridge or the new SE school.
Yes!!!!!!
I understand Mrs. Gray's concerns but one High School is the answer for Decatur. We can do things to make instruction be individualized, but we can't keep spreading resources so thin if we want to compete!! I love that we are finally having this discussion.
I'm not in favor of one high school....too many students for one campus!
Bad idea!! No need to combine. We will have too many students on one campus plus increased traffic. Why don't they just remodel the current schools!! They could use Calhoun for alternative classes that city schools can't offer.

Have you talked to us at Calhoun about that Lisa? That won't work. If try to explain it but I doubt you would understand.
No Duh!! I have not talked to Calhoun & I'm sure It would work if details could be worked out . No need for to say I wouldn't understand. Rude!!
Yes, Hammond WILL vote for a tax increase. He'll "chew" it over, but he'll do it and so will CrookedAnders and JoblessKirby. Don't think Ard or Jackson will.
TAX TAX TAX!!
The numbers will be no where near that high as long as there is a 9th grade academy and a trade/tech school.
Tear down oak park and Brookhaven and put the students at dhs and ahs. Those middle school buildings are in terrible condition and have a poor layout.
Lisa, you're sure the details could be worked out? No. They can't. We dont have room. Move along.
L, you are a genius. Either build one for Austin or one for Decatur. I am sure that would go over perfectly in this city. Please do not comment anymore because obviously you don't know anything.
So Russ what would you do.
Good idea. Use the wallace campus. It will drive. Development that way and. Increase. Our. Tax base.
check out the population in Decatur. much better places to develop than the wallace center land. why develop an area so close to a boundary?
They say they don't have expansion room on either campus....Instead of building out, why not build up?
How bout we take 25 bulldoziers and level the fairgrounds. That would be plenty big for a new high school
I've still not heard the great advantages to combining the HS students into one facility - just that the exiting buildings are old and land locked. This may be an opportunity to consider changes to DCS in total. Someone suggested that the 9th graders be separated from the others, but I think this would be best for the 6th graders. 6th grade is a much more transitional stage both academically and socially - having a facility of their own would allow them to find their way through this stage without the pressure and influence of students in higher grades. I would like to see the Board look at the possiblity of moving 9th grade to the middle (or Jr. High) schools (which would alleviate the space problem in the HS), and moving 6th graders to a facility of their own.
People looking for a place to raise kids aren't always sold on new facilities. They're looking for the best educational experience for their children. Lets be innovative in the education of our youth and focus on what's going on inside rather than just erecting a shiny new building.
Not sure if a single high school is needed.
Since more college prep students are at DHS, why not put all the college prep students at DHS and the non-college prep at AHS?
Renovate AHS vocational facilities so AHS grads might get job. Lower class size at DHS and focus on college prep.
Projections show that Decatur's population is dropping. Once sufficient space is available, all of the alternate programs and discipline programs could also be moved to AHS. They should fit in nice over there.
This sound like a good plan/
Dave, I guess you think you are clever. It is a sad day when those in our commuinty decide that IT REALLY IS TRUE that what your physical adress is dictates what YOU are. If an Austin student moves to Rosemont are they then cured of their "southwest" sickness???? Grow up and help solve problems instead of using the same railroad track menatlity that got us here int he first place! GHEEZ
I'm with Dave. Austin grads are obviously inferior. We should accept this and coordinate student s accordingly .
Old Wallace Center Is Not A Good Place, TOO FAR OUT, OLD FAIR GROUNDS, BETTER PLACE, Much Closer In For People To Drive
