One on one with ... Lawrence County’s Whitney Woodard

Admittedly shy, Whitney Woodard didn’t elaborate much as she stepped off the court during Wednesday’s practice. Though quiet by nature, the 5-foot-3 senior shooting guard had something else in mind as the team kept drilling: Sub-regionals.

On Saturday, Woodard scored 12 points to help the Red Devils take the area championship. With enough focus and hard work, she hopes the team would come out strong again when Lawrence County (24-6) hosts Hartselle tonight.

Decatur Daily sports writer Meredith Qualls sat down with Woodard for 10 questions:

Question: How old were you when you started playing basketball?

Answer: When I was about 8.

Q: Do you play any other sports?

A: I play softball.

Q: I’ve heard you have a nickname. What is it and where did it come from?

A: It’s Pooh. When I was born, they wanted to call me Whitney. My dad wanted to give me a nickname so he would always call me “Whitney the Pooh.” It just stuck. One of my friends came to school calling me that, and everybody called me that.

Q: Is there any significance to your jersey number (14)?

A: I’ve just had it since I was little, so I just kept the same number.

Q: What’s the biggest improvement you’ve tried to make this year?

A: Shooting better. I just worked on it a little after practice.

Q: Are there any sports you have never tried that you would like to try?

A: Tennis, because coach Kenny Coffey is always talking about it. It just seems like it would be fun.

Q: Do you have a favorite subject in school?

A: I like math. It’s probably the best.

Q: What are you interested in doing after high school and college?

A: I think I want to be a marine biologist.

Q: Lawrence County has had a lot of big moments this season. Which has been the most memorable to you?

A: Coming out and winning the area tournament. We were kind of an underdog. We were this third seed coming out and winning it.

Q: Who is one of the funnier players on this team?

A: Probably Adrien Coffey. She’s just goofy, dancing around and stuff all the time.
