Can somebody explain to me what the reason is for describing young Ms. Greer's vehicle in such detail? How is this relevant to the story and have anything to do with what happened? This young lady needs our prayers and putting something like that in the story seems very low-brow.

that's good old decatur daily

Calhoun, I say this in a very humble tone. please don't make a big deal out of that. It's just there to help provide a mental picture about the personality of the young girl. A young girl with her whole life still ahead of her.

I agree Cheryl.

We Need To PLEASE PRAY For This Family,,,,,I Don't Know Them,,,But Still My Heart Breaks For Them,,,,,We Never Know What We May Have To Go Thru In Our Lifetime,,,,,But We Do Know That GOD IS With Us Thru It All...PLEASE PRAY

Lawyers are paid and trained to defend. Get ready for a defense that will anger many of us. I believe Terry's recent injuries and the various medications he was taking will be used as a defense. This strategy is working more times than not and provides a lesser form of punishment, which eventually allows the felon to return to our neighborhoods.

I think there is more to this His attempt to hide his shame will come out.

Casinokid . . I agree. His actions described above do not reflect that of a mentally unbalanced person. They describe a man's failed attempt to carry out a plan and he had to revert to plan B becasue he did not anticipate someone fighting back. I do not know the family but I would be willing to bet that in a few months some type of criminal activity will surface that he was involved in. The poor young lady who survived needs all of our prayers and support. This is all so sad.

I totally agree with Tony. Sadly, I think Mr. Greer was trying to silence his wife & daughter, and that's why he went after them first. If he had intended to kill himself (only) he could have done that first. He will be judged by God.

Ok..there was a lot more going on at that church than the Daily is reporting:

Timothy,,,I Could not Find It,,,,Is There Some Other way to find it or could you tell us what was said

You people are disgusting. You are implying something that isn't true. Kudos to the Daily for not engaging in tabloid like gossip and leaps. You people that are always griping about the daily are now griping because they are being professional and not sensationalizing the story. I hope you all develop painful hemorrhoids .

William . . . per your quote: "You are implying something that isn't true.". OK. You have the floor. How do you know?

GARDENDALE, Alabama -- As a hard rain fell on Gardendale Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church this afternoon, members gathered to meet, pray, receive counseling and discuss the latest horrible news that had stunned the already troubled 700-member congregation.

Their pastor, the Rev. Terry Greer, had shot his wife, Lisa, 52, and their daughter, Suzanna, 18, on Thursday at the church-owned parsonage, police say. Lisa Greer died today at 12:30 a.m. at UAB Hospital. At 2 p.m., church greeters gathered for a meeting to discuss how to handle upcoming Sunday services.

"It's been hectic," said Interim Pastor Jeri Hunt, who has been preaching at the church in recent months as Greer tried to recover from a series of health problems, including heart surgery several years ago, a wreck in October driving himself to the hospital with chest pains, and later falling off the deck at the parsonage. "Everybody's in shock. We've been praying for Terry and his family. We've been leaning on the Lord."

The church's contemporary worship leader, Joel Kent Hodges, 31, was arrested Dec. 28 for soliciting a child under 16 for sex and traveling to meet a child for sex. He posted bonds of $30,000 on the first charge and $60,000 on the second and was released Dec. 31, according to Jefferson County Jail officials.

"As far as we know there's no relation" between Hodges' arrest and Greer's attack on his wife and daughter, said Gardendale Police Chief Mike Walker. The Jefferson County District Attorney has issued warrants for Greer for murder, with a $75,000 bond, and attempted murder, a $60,000 bond.

Church members also said they don't think there's a connection between the criminal charges against two staff members, but think the church has endured a streak of bad luck.

Greer had only been at the church since June, after serving as pastor since 2004 at First United Methodist in Decatur, and seldom preached. Hodges, even less well known to the congregation, had been on staff for less time than that.

Greer stabbed himself in the chest and neck after his daughter took the pistol away from him, Walker said. Suzanna went to a neighbor, who called police. Greer resisted arrest when police arrived. He is expected to recover. His daughter, a freshman at the University of South Alabama, is also expected to recover. She was able to give Gardendale police a detailed description of what happened, Walker said.

Several dozen people came by the church to speak to counselors and to pray.

"It's very sad, very hard to deal with," said church member Marguerite Craft.

The church had been troubled by the ailing pastor's absence and reclusiveness. "He's been sick for several months," Craft said. "He'd get a little better, and then something else would happen. He's had a lot of physical problems."

Greer had preached from the pulpit in late summer, lamenting his daughter going off to college.

"He was a wonderful person," Craft said. "We just never saw this coming."

The Greers worried about their daughter, going to get her in Mobile before a hurricane approached, said church member Laura Dunson.

Greer spoke fondly of his daughter and it's shocking he would hurt her or his wife, she said.

The church had been concerned about his isolation, Dunson said.

"He stayed pretty much in seclusion," after his latest injury, she said.

The allegations against the worship minister were addressed on Sunday, Dec. 30, after his arrest. It was announced he was terminated.

"We're floundering a little bit," Dunson said. "Our conference leaders are stepping up to help us through this."

Officials from the North Alabama Conference of the United Methodist Church, including three counselors, were at the church all day.

"Today our focus is congregational care," said Danette Clifton, communications director for the North Alabama Conference of the United Methodist Church. "Our concern is to be a ministry to all those people affected."

Bishop Debra Wallace-Padgett will speak at the church Sunday during all three services, at 8:30, 9:45 and 11 a.m. Counselors will be available again on Sunday, Clifton said.

Church members are hoping for something positive.

"We feel we've been under attack for awhile," Dunson said. "But our savior is a lot greater than our enemy. We've got a great church. We just need to come together and stay in prayer. I think good will triumph."

Walker said he's concerned about Suzanna Greer after what she's endured. "She's going to have a hard time, no doubt," he said. "We need to all be very supportive."

Tony has it right.

Anybody who knows the Greers knows that there is nothing to hide. The reason had to be the drugs he was taking. I have not doubt that he was probably one some powerful pain medications and probably something related to depression. I took an anti-depressant for 24 hours because my rheumatologist thought it would help with arthritis pain. In just 24 hours, I had some terrifying dreams. It had to be the prescription drugs that he was taking under doctors' orders.

Ben . . are you his doctor? Do you know 100% for sure he was taking meds? I stand behind my original assumption and I really really really hope I am 150% wrong. However, what the police reported DOES NOT reflect the actions of someone who was suffering mental issues or adverse reactions to any medication.

I think he was some way involved with the sex scandal and didn't want to embarrass his wife and daughter. Therefore, he was going to kill the whole family! But my question is WHY WAS HIS BOND ONLY 135,000? If you sell drugs or traffic drugs you get a 1,000,000 bond. This man kills his wife, try to kill his daughter and his bond is that low? This speaks volumes about our judicial system.....

Herman - I believe that the article says $135,000 bail Bail is the actual cash that must be paid to be released and is sometimes a percentage of your bond.

I don't know about Gardendale, but Decatur's drug dealers have nowhere even close to 1,000,000 bonds....

@Billy G The meth heads arrested in Hartselle on 12/23 had a 1,000,000 bond.

@Daryn . . .correct. Judge Thompson nailed all 5 with a 1,000,000+ bond. I would love to see more of this.
