Roberts’ teammates rescue West Morgan
From staff reports

TRINITY — Elkmont's plan to stifle West Morgan's dynamic Brandon Roberts was, for the most part, a success in the opening round of the Class 3A, Area 15 tournament.

Unfortunately for the Red Devils, the Rebels aren't a one-man show.

With Elkmont's double-team limiting Roberts to an uncharacteristically low 10 points, the Rebels got double-figure efforts from three other players in a 70-44 victory that advanced the host team to Monday's championship game against Madison Academy.

The win also secures West Morgan a berth in next week's sub-regional round.

Using a combination of double-team pressure and a stingy box-and-one defense, Elkmont kept the high-scoring Roberts in check for most of the game. Without their leading scorer's usual production rolling in, the Rebels got 16 points and six assists from Grant Workman and 11 points from J.T. Kirby. Dustin Morgan added 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Bryant Wales had a game-high 24 points in the loss for Elkmont.

Tip-off for Monday's championship game is set for 7 p.m.

Class 1A, Area 14

Decatur Heritage 73, Saint Bernard 40: Nathan Lee poured in 33 points, hitting 12 of 16 field goals and 9 of 11 free throws, as the host Eagles cruised to Monday's championship game against Falkville.

Tyde Coffey added eight points for Decatur Heritage, which led 27-17 at the half after holding Saint Bernard to just three points in the opening quarter.

Sean Moriarty had 21 points in the loss.

Falkville 53, Meek 40: Travis Cole had 14 points in leading Falkville to a berth in Monday's area championship game.

Aaron Estes and Trevor Blackwood each had nine points for Falkville, which led 22-15 at halftime.

Seth Hayes (14) and Jensen Miller (11) paced Meek in the loss.

Class 1A, Area 16

Shoals Christian 66, Athens Bible 52: Shoals Christian jumped in front early and held on the rest of the way against Athens Bible.

Tanner Traglia scored a season-high 19 points to pace the Flame (13-13), who will face R.A. Hubbard on Monday in the championship game.

Daniel Wood scored nine of his 17 points in the first quarter as Shoals Christian took a 20-12 lead. Will Bishop added 10 points.

Will Hamilton's 16 points paced Athens Bible.

R.A. Hubbard 81, Waterloo 35: R.A. Hubbard moved into the area tournament final behind 27 points from John Owens.

The Chiefs led 32-20 at halftime before outscoring Waterloo 20-6 in the third period to extend the margin to 52-26. Hubbard did not slow down in the final period, scoring 29 points en route to the victory.

Deontae Carter finished with 13 points for the Chiefs, who will host Shoals Christian in Monday's championship game. Wayne Darby paced Waterloo with nine points.

Class 2A, Area 15

Tanner 66, Lexington 46: Greg Maclin had 20 points and 12 rebounds as Tanner advanced to Monday's championship game with the win.

Fred Rich had 12 points for the Rattlers (22-4), while Justin Smith added 11.

Wade McNutt had 16 points in the loss for Lexington, while Jake Rogers added 11.

Tanner will face Hatton in Monday's finals at 7 p.m.

Hatton 49, Sheffield 46: Ty Terry scored 22 points and Sheffield missed two 3-pointers on its final possession in a bid to send the game to overtime as Hatton edged the Bulldogs.

Hatton (17-8) overcame a five-point deficit in the fourth quarter to advance to Monday's final against Tanner. Terry hit six free throws in the final quarter to help the Hornets hold on.

Hunter Danley scored 16 points, J.D. Smith added 11 and Shaquille Carroll finished with 10 for Sheffield.

Class 4A, Area 15

East Lawrence 56, Haleyville 46: Three players reached double figures as East Lawrence advanced to Monday's championship game with the win.

Terrence Deloney led East Lawrence with 17 points, while Garrett Pilgrim added 13. Malik Garth had 10.

Dakota Rushing had a game-high 18 points in the loss for Haleyville.

East Lawrence will play Brooks in Monday's final.

Class 4A, Area 16

West Limestone 56, Central 46: Aaron McWilliams scored 21 points and West Limestone advanced to Monday's championship game against Wilson.

The Wildcats (21-9) outscored Central 21-5 in the second quarter and held on the rest of the way. Nathaniel Adams added 15 points and Caleb McConnell finished with 11 points.

Desmond Koger scored 13 points for Central.

Class 5A, Area 16

Russellville 65, Lawrence County 59: Russellville built a big early lead but had to rally in a see-saw fourth quarter to beat Lawrence County and keep its season alive.

Jackson Smith scored a game-high 25 points, and Caleb Robinson added 16 for the Golden Tigers (11-14), who led 20-6 after the first quarter.

Lawrence County took a brief lead in the fourth quarter before Russellville took the lead for good.

Jesse Childress led Lawrence County with 18 points. James Vernon added 11.

Athens 60, Muscle Shoals 46: Muscle Shoals got off to a fast start in its bid to upset top-seeded Athens, but a second-half surge by the Golden Eagles proved to much to overcome.

Nathanial Potts scored 17 points, including 11 of 14 free throws, and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead Athens into the championship game.

Debo Reeder paced Muscle Shoals (10-16) with 17 points and LaDamien Stanford added 10 points.

Muscle Shoals led 16-11 after the first quarter and trailed by one point at the half. But the Trojans went cold from the field after intermission, allowing Athens to pull away.

The Trojans were just 1 of 18 from 3-point range and shot 37 percent for the game.

Trey Potts added 11 points for Athens and Neil Malone scored 11.
