Rogers stopped a tying 2-point conversion run with 21 seconds to play, preserving a key Class 4A, Region 8 win over West Limestone.
Trailing 21-13, Dillion Miller scored on a 3-yard run with 21 seconds to play, pulling West Limestone within two. But the Pirates stopped a sweep on the conversion to seal the win.
Caleb McConnell threw touchdown passes of 18 yards to Drake Lopez and 10 yards to Alex Ritterbush to offset three TD runs by Rogers quarterback Austin Kerr.
McConnell’s pass to Lopez gave the Wildcats an early 7-0 lead.
Kerr tied it with a 4-yard run and then gave the Pirates the halftime lead with a 5-yard run. He finished with 73 yards on 13 carries and threw for 128 in the win.
McConnell’s strike to Ritterbush pulled the Wildcats within 14-13. West Limestone tried a 2-point conversion run after a penalty moved the ball inside the 2-yard-line, but the Pirates came up with a stop on a running play.
Kerr’s 23-yard run made it 21-13 with 5:43 to play before West Limestone made it interesting at the end.
“We had high expectations,” West Limestone coach David Arnsparger said. “Nobody gave us a chance. This showed we could play hard football.”
