Shaun Johnson’s first-quarter touchdown gave Athens a shot at the upset, but Russellville rallied for the win behind the running of Tyler Boyd.
Johnson’s 12-yard run in the first quarter gave Athens the early lead, but Boyd scored on runs of 10 and 49 yards to spark the Golden Tigers to the win.
Boyd finished with 112 yards on 18 carries. He got the equalizer in the second quarter on a 10-yard run as the teams went to halftime tied at 7.
CJ Posey gave Russellville (5-2, 3-2) the lead for good in the third quarter with a 16-yard run. Adam Brown’s 20-yard field goal put the Golden Tigers ahead 16-7.
Boyd sealed the win with a 49-yard burst in the fourth quarter.
Russellville finished with 276 yards while Athens managed 177, including 114 in the air.
Johnnie Anderson led the Golden Eagles with six catches for 177 yards.
