...and the Morgan County Sheriff is doing????

Let the teachers have guns. Require firearms training for several teachers. Have their classrooms near main access points in the school. This would be far more effective than all the other craziness being proposed. Metal detectors, security systems, blah, blah, blah none of this works if someone plans and is willing to die for his/her cause. I guess the real question is, do we have the back-bone to shoot back...it seems we have become a nation of cowards.

Really Robert - Can you see the teachers job descriptions? Under what circumstances would they be justified in brandishing their weapon, or discharging it? Should we assume that they would shoot only after all of the students were safely out of range? Who will pay the costs of settlements when these teachers accidentally kill someone other than the perpetrator? What happens when a student obtains the teachers weapon and goes on their own rampage? Is the teacher, the school or the student to blame at that point? What happens when one of these teachers "loses it" and uses their "approved" weapon for evil rather than good? Would you then recommend that we arm all students? Where does it end?

I am not opposed to private citizens bearing arms AND I get that we want to protect our children, but I am not willing to have them live in what appears to be a police state, just because crazy people do crazy things. They need to know that the world is a wonderful and dangerous place. If you want to experience the wonder, there are risks involved. Basically, you can miss the pain, but then you'd miss the dance.

@THOR . . . I would suspect the Sherriff is standing by waiting to be asked for assistance which she will no doubt be more than willing to provide. Decatur City Schools falls under DPD jrisdiction, not MCSO.

The sherriff is in the process of busting another couple dozen meth makers!!! Do you think the sherriff department should stop doing that and wait for a call from a county school for increased security?

After someone is in the building - buzzed in or other wise - if they mean harm it is already too late. Have a lobby where the visitor can meet with the person they came to see. Do not let them enter at all. You never know about domestic problems or any other type of problem going on. Lock every door to each classroom. Make the doors bullet proof. We protect prisoners better than we protect our children. I don't care how much it cost or increases taxes - protecting the entrance to schools has to be done. Gun control and mental illness control would take years to develop a means. Protect the schools now.

Let all visitors sit and wait in a jail cell like setting tell screened and checked for weapons and motive!

Should we put up guard towers and razor wire as well? We'll need to eliminate all outdoor recess and P.E. activities unless we surround the school with bullet proof walls. No more school dances, or chorus/band performances as we couldn't possibly vet every single attendee. Forget about sports. Students and faculty at football games are just sitting ducks! What about basketball, volleyball, softball and baseball? I cannot believe how irresponsible we've been by allowing these events when it is so dangerous. There is no way to protect students and faculty in wide open spaces, or do background checks on everyone that enters the gym for an event. So, the best thing to do is eliminate sports and music all together. Uh oh, I almost forgot about graduation! Whew, imagine trying to protect all of the students and faculty at such a large event with all kind of scary people attending. Hey, kids today are quite techno savvy, we can just e-mail their dipolmas.

*I am NOT belittling the tragedy of last week by any means! It was horrific, sad and sickening. It should move us all to be more aware of how quickly we can lose the ones we love. It should NOT move us to create an environment for our children based in FEAR.
