To The Daily: It seems all the schools around here are jumping on the bandwagon to implement a buzz-in system of security at the schools. It seems to me they have entirely missed the point.
This system failed in Newtown. The guy simply shot his way in. That is not the answer.
You would do better to have an armed guard in each school and possibly think about arming at least the principal.
That principal in Newtown might have had a chance to take out the gunman if she had been carrying a weapon.
Also, bars on the doors and windows wouldn't hurt.
If we have to have mentally unbalanced people out on the streets, the rest of us are going to have to be able to defend ourselves against them.

That sounds more like a prison than a school.
Putting an armed guard at a school has just as much chance of him getting murdered by a lunatic as the children. There is no solid reason to believe that armed guards will save anyone. No reason to go into the cost factor...it is NOT AFFORDABLE.
Why not move all of the prisoners out of the jail and let the students attend classes there? (sarcasm intended)
DCS is aware that there is NOTHING which will stop a determined person. They are also aware that doing NOTHING is not acceptable. Therefore, cameras and buzzers....
To "S",
I assume you work for DCS by all your comments. I'm glad you have an inside track on ALL the decisions that are made and EVERYTHING that is going on! One would think that you are the super. himself but by your ridiculous posts we know better!
Now, to everyone else, nothing is going to keep everyone completely safe. I personally think the buzz system is crazy. No one is going to come to the front door with their gun insight to be buzzed in! Come on! And there are adults in buildings that will open other doors during the day for people when there are signs posted that people must go to the main entrance and check in at the office. How are we to solve that?
To "Russ", 1) Your assumption is wrong. 2) What is ridiculous about my post (other than the part that I said was sarcastic)? 3) Since "nothing is going to keep everyone completely safe", would you be satisfied if DCS did nothing? 4) Your criticism is noted - can you offer a viable solution?
I read all your posts. You speak for DCS/Ed Nichols all the time is what I'm referring to. I just think your inside track that you seem to think you have is not always appreciated. This is an opinion place not a place for a "know it all" to try to blab what they think they know the DCS is saying/doing all the time. Whether you change your name or letter you go by, your posts are the same. I would bet that you are the exact same kind of person at your place of work.."know it all"! DCS is going to do what they want to do no matter what you or I think. They always get boards together but their opinion really has no effect because they already have their minds made up. So, peons like you should just keep your thoughts to yourself and I'm sure Ed would appreciate you keeping his Central Office business quiet until he tells it! Have a good day!
Excuse me, I meant to say committees instead of boards.
And you call ME the "know it all". You've fabricated facts about me and attacked by opinons. I haven't changed my name or letter on this forum and I am not connected with DCS (so I have no idea how I could possibly know facts about their business). I am, however, entited to comment in this "opinon place" just as you are entitled to criticize the work of others, do nothing to contribute, and claim it is because no one cares what you think. Tell me, is this the kind of person you are at work?
No....I very well may be your boss. Also, I did not mean that you changed your name on this post. I said that I read your other posts/comments too.
LOL. We all know you're not anyone's boss. Why don't you re-read your post...."Whether you change your name or letter you go by, your posts are the same." I know you say you read all my posts (and apparently give me credit for some I didn't write too). I'm so flattered.
Just so you'll know, barring any event to prevent it, DCS will hold classes Monday and continue with a curriculum of academics and physical education.
The NRA said it best . . ."The only thing that will stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun."
Tony giving a gun to some of the wierdos who want them is putting guns in the hands of the very ones we who shouldn't have them. .. We don't know who the bad guys are..like that cartoon character said," We has met the enemy and they are us!"

Then don't give guns to weirdos. Damn that was hard to figure out.
One or more non uniformed people would be a great asset in that a shooter could not necessarily target that threat before turning on others. The same thing is accomplished with air marshals. Truly crazy people will not consider this before acting but making it know would cause most to stop and think before choosing this venue. Buzzer, cameras etc are only things that cost a great deal and do little.. The president has armed guards, our banks have armed guards as do many celebrities, why not our children??
Steven, this to me, is the only thing that will work. If a school has armed guards - and everyone is aware of it - I doubt that there would be anyone trying to get in. The doors still need to be locked and the windows protected with some type of wire. The school shootings are going on while the government argues over who is right. Just do it now and if a better solution comes up later - then consider it.
