Though the 'U Prayed?" Vote No for Alcohol campaign was officially announced only last week, wrecked cars and green “U Prayed?” signs, such as the wrecked car on the side of U.S. 36 entering Hartselle, have been displayed on the sides of the roads of Hartselle for weeks.

Political action group A Better Way officially announced, last week, the beginning of their campaign at Hartselle Church of Christ. The group is working alongside another political action group, Families for a Safe Hartselle, to prevent the sale of alcohol in Hartselle.

The vote to sell alcohol is planned to be on the Nov. 6, 2012, general election ballot. In a recent press release A Better Way stated that it “is a group of concerned citizens focused on stopping the sale of liquor in Hartselle and promoting our quality of life. We are focused on asking people to pray for those who have and may be affected by alcohol. The cost of the alcohol referendum passing is not in dollars, but rather in lives affected.”

Though the campaign was officially announced only last week, wrecked cars and green “U Prayed?” signs, such as the wrecked car on the side of U.S. 36 entering Hartselle, have been displayed on the sides of the roads of Hartselle for weeks. Many churches have also posted coordinating phrases on their announcement signs, such as the ones above from East Highland Baptist Church and Son Rise Baptist Church.

I always loved how members of the Church of Christ (and certain other churches.... you know who you are....) always thought it was in there best interest to decide what was "best for us" instead of asking "how we felt".

.

I believe if they don't want to drink, then that's their right. But I have never figured out how they looked down their noses at people for not "following their beliefs" and still considered themselves true Christians.

Bob, I would respectfully ask you to read you bible and search your heart. Alcohol is known as the last legal drug for many reasons. Studies show that many use alcohol to self medicate rather than dealing with the problem, not that this is a problem of yours.

And the more accessible it is for those of legal age, the more accessible it is for those who are not. We have to share the roads with those who consume alcoholic beverages in restaurants. To me, it is much like being forced to breath the cigarette smoke-filled air in a restaurant as I do not smoke and am allergic. This has been removed from restaurants because it is known to be hazardous to the health of many. The needs of many outweigh the needs of the few.

Yes, vote for what you think is right...but what is right not only for yourself, but also for your loved ones, your neighbors, and your town. What if it fails to pass again? Will your life really change all that much? Is a dry Hartselle hindering you from purchasing and consuming it alcohol?

Churches aren't telling you how to live. Churches are following the example of Christ how to live and trying to encourage others to do the same. In the bible, when moneychangers in the temple, Jesus got angry, spoke out, and turned over tables to prove His point. He was loudly standing up for God's will.

Churches are trying to preserve a way of life not marred by the devastating potential of alcohol consumption. It is an opposing view. Rather than insult those who oppose you, respectfully disagree.
