ATHENS — Athens police said they arrested a convicted sex offender Tuesday after they caught him working near a school.
Michael James Kent, 38, of 16630 Fort Hampton Road, Lot 21, Elkmont, was charged with violating the Alabama Sex Offenders Act.
Kent was working at 801 South Clinton Street, less than 2,000 feet from Athens Middle School, police said.
The law requires sex offenders to work more than 2,000 feet from schools or childcare facilities.
Kent was taken to Limestone County Jail and later released on $5,000 bail.
According to the Alabama Department of Public Safety’s web site, Kent was convicted in 1995 of second-degree sexual misconduct involving a 15-year-old girl.
