Sheffield man faces charges in shooting
Police chief: Victim in critical condition
By Tom Smith - TNValleyNow.com

TUSCUMBIA — Police said charges were filed Wednesday against a Sheffield man in connection with a Tuesday afternoon shooting that left a Tuscumbia man in critical condition.

Larry Darnell Jarmon Jr., 29, Sheffield, was charged with attempted murder, shooting into an occupied dwelling and reckless endangerment, Tuscumbia Police Chief Tony Logan said.

Logan said detectives talked with the district attorney and the decision was made to file the charges. He said Jarmon was taken into custody between 7-8 p.m. Tuesday during a traffic stop on U.S. 72 and Alabama 247.

Logan said the Colbert County Sheriff’s Department and the Colbert County Drug Task Force assisted in making the traffic stop.

“We got information on what kind of vehicle (Jarmon) was in and which way he was traveling and about what time he would be coming through that intersection,” Logan said.

He said when the traffic stop was made, two other people were in the car with Jarmon. Logan said Jarmon was taken into custody without incident.

“We also took the other two into custody and talked with them, but they were not charged,” Logan said.

Jarmon is accused of shooting Brandon Johnson, 23, of Tuscumbia, at 720 Hickory St., on Tuesday afternoon. The shooting was reported at 1:04 p.m. by one of two witnesses at the residence, Logan said.

Johnson was shot once in the chest, police said. He was flown to Huntsville Hospital.

Logan said Wednesday morning the latest word he got from Huntsville Hospital was that Johnson was in critical condition.

Police said the shooting apparently occurred after an argument between Johnson and Jarmon. Logan said the argument was apparently over money.

Logan said Johnson was shot inside the residence but crawled outside, where medical responders found him. Authorities said Johnson was shot with a .32-caliber pistol.

Late Tuesday night police said a pistol believed to have been the one used in the shooting was recovered at a Tuscumbia residence.

Once they arrived at the residence, authorities sealed off the scene and investigators later returned with a warrant to search the house, which is across from Oakwood Cemetery.

Logan said G. W. Trenholm Primary School was placed on lockdown for at least an hour while authorities searched for the suspect.

“Apparently, some people in the house left before officers arrived,” Logan said. “We had units on the scene within a minute after receiving the call.”
