Of course no one ever considered that the green space was a lot more beneficial to the "look" of 6th avenue then another Wal-Mart which will end up looking trashy just like the one on the belt line. Not to mention it will be built next to a beautiful church who certainly could have benefited from a well kept green space and perhaps donated by some not for profit seeking soul who saw more to the space then a ratty parking lot, I guess the song "they paved paradise and put up a parking lot" applies here. There are at least 7 other grocery stores etc within an easy mile and a quarter of the site, not to mention the Dollar Store, Big Lots, Walgreens and Rie Aid amongst others who will all be affected adversely by the unnecessary addition of this store. So our city leadership, and I use the term loosely here, has no long term vision for the future impact this addition will have on the sales of these stores and the possible closing of some of them as Wal-Mart does what it does best, over run their competitors with substandard goods. At one time, Decaturs sixth avenue was something to be proud of, but now it is an eyesore which has a negative impact on the overall well being of the city and it's ability to attract first class businesses and therefore more jobs. Once again the lack of a City Planner and for that matter a City Manager is so obvious, unfortunately the citizens of this not so fair city are, by their own choice, stuck with this kind of non management for the next 4 years. So I guess we can expect more of the same, keep it up and Decatur will continue to take a backseat to Huntsville, Madison, and Athens. If it weren't so tragic it would almost be laughable.
All you had to do to keep the green space was get a couple million bucks and buy it.
You missed the point, but I'm not at all surprised.
Its all about money and money is the root of all EVIL! Decatur did not need another grocery store on 6th Avenue. There is 3 already plus Krogers, Aldi and Publix on the Beltline.
I'd bet my next paycheck that 3 out of the 4 above comments are from liberals....
