Tanner clinches area title

SHEFFIELD — Jace Haggermaker had 18 points and eight rebounds as Tanner High wrapped up a tough stretch of six games in eight days by beating Sheffield 52-40 Tuesday night.

The win clinched the regular season Class 2A, Area 15 title for the top-ranked Rattlers, with one area game against Lexington left to play.

Fred Rich and Greg Maclin each scored 10 points for Tanner, with Maclin going 5-of-5 from the free-throw line.

Rich added nine rebounds for the Rattlers (13-2).

Shaquille Carroll led all Sheffield scorers with 18 points. Simon Ridgeway had eight points for the Bulldogs, while Hunter Danley added seven.

Florence 71, Decatur 56: Chaunce Watkins poured in 34 points as Florence improved to 15-5 on the season and 2-3 in Class 6A, Area 16 play with a win against Decatur.

The Falcons broke open a 12-all tie to claim a 29-26 halftime lead. Watkins tallied 15 points in the third quarter and Florence outscored Decatur 42-30 in the second half to claim the home win.

Sophomore Cameron Twitty led Decatur (6-12, 1-3) with 19 points and Na’Vante Wiliams had 12.

Athens 50, Muscle Shoals 39: Nathanial Potts and Jackson Pettus each scored 13 points as Athens claimed a road win over Muscle Shoals in Class 5A, Area 16 play.

The Golden Eagles led 18-15 at the half, and then outscored the Trojans 32-24 in the second half.

R.A. Hubbard 76, Covenant Christian 47: Austin Beasley led 12 Hubbard players in double figures with 12 points in the win.

Deonta Carter had 11 points and 11 rebounds for the Chiefs (9-2), while Tevin Ray added 10 points.

Sam Griffin had a game-high 18 points in the loss for Covenant Christian,
while Andrew Marks added 11.

Lawrence County 54, West Point 48: Gabe Vernon had a game-high 13 points in the win for Lawrence County.

Jesse Moreno and Jesse Childress each had 10 points for the Red Devils (10-12).
Jordan McKenzie had 12 points in the loss for West Point.

Lawrence County continues play on Friday in the Lawrence County Tournament.

Danville 58, Vinemont 50: Justin Morgan had 16 points to lead the Hawks as they clinched the regular season Class 3A, Area 14 title.

Allen Cordova had 12 points for the Hawks, while Patrick Doherty added 11.

Riley Faust led all Vinemont scorers with 13 points, while Dillon Hopper added 10.

Priceville 47, Decatur Heritage 45: Luke Mason poured in 15 points and Hayden Prentice controlled the boards with 10 rebounds as Priceville beat Decatur Heritage.

Priceville overcame a two-point deficit in the fourth quarter, outscoring Decatur Heritage 16-12 during that stretch.

Lee Godwin led Decatur Heritage with 14 points, while Jacob Crews tossed in 12.

Marc McClendon and Chandler Linvgston each scored nine points for Priceville.

West Limestone 82, Clements 39: Aaron McWilliams paced West Limestone (16-7) with 19 points as the Wildcats beat Clements.

West Limestone led 45-25 at halftime.

Grant Baugher finished with 11 points for West Limestone, while Zane Griffin and Nathaniel Adams each had 10 points.

Harrison Russell and Ontario Patrick finished with seven points each to lead Clements.

Girls

Lawrence County 66, West Point 38: Three players reached double figures in the win for Lawrence County.

Rachell Childress had a game-high 22 points and 12 rebounds for Lawrence County, which improved to 16-6 with the win.

Adrien Coffey had 19 points for the Red Devils, while Tori McDaniel added 13 points and seven steals.

Madison Rusk had 11 points in the loss for West Point.

Muscle Shoals 51, Athens 47: DaNesha Byrd led all scorers with 18 points as Muscle Shoals knocked off Athens to claim the top spot in Class 5A, Area 16.

The Trojans held a 21-19 advantage at the half and outscored Athens 30-28 over the final 16 minutes to seal the home win.

Shana Sherrod added 10 points for Muscle Shoals (4-10, 3-0).

Destiny Bailey and Alliyah Smith each had 11 points for Athens.

Danville 59, Vinemont 42: Jesse Oliver had 13 points as Danville stretched its winning streak to seven games with a victory over Vinemont.

Erin Cleghorn added nine points for the Hawks (18-7), who led 36-10 at the half.
Jordan Melton had 13 points in the loss for Vinemont, while Sydney Wallace added 10.

R.A. Hubbard 48, Covenant Christian 31: Alex Gholston posted a double-double, scoring 20 points and grabbing 15 rebounds in the win.

Ashton McCoy added nine points for the Chiefs (9-2), who held Covenant Christian to just 12 first-half points.

Anna Claire Noblit had 16 points in the loss for Covenant Christian, while Bailey Hill added 12.

Tanner 54, Sheffield 4: Sophomore Kelsey Houston scored 16 points and Kacie Dentleegrand added 13 as Tanner went on the road to beat Sheffield.

The Rattlers outscored the Bulldogs 27-0 in the third quarter to seal the win.

West Limestone 54, Clements 51: Kayla Carter poured in 17 points to pace West Limestone.

Bugg Grizzard and Autumn Bates finished with 11 points each for the Wildcats, who led 25-19 at halftime.
