AUBURN — Jonathon Fletcher and Fred Rich scored two touchdowns each to lead Tanner to a 28-14 victory over Washington County today for the Class 2A championship at Jordan-Hare Stadium.
The win gave the Rattlers their first state crown in football.
Tanner took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on Rich's 18-yard run. Washington County tied it 7-7 with 4:14 left in the first half on T.J. Kidd's 5-yard run.
Fletcher scrambled 5 yards for a third-quarter score to give Tanner (14-0) the lead for good at 14-7 as its defense shut down Washington County (13-2), grabbing four interceptions.
Rich ended a 12-play, 93-yard Tanner drive with a 4-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter. Fletcher sealed the win by returning an interception 44 yards for the Rattlers' final TD and a 28-7 lead. It was Fletcher's second interception.
Washington County scored with 2:03 left for the final margin.
Rich, the game's MVP, finished with 81 yards on 13 carries and intercepted a pass on fourth-and-goal when Washington County was just 4 yards away from tying the game at 14 in the third quarter.
Hayden Stephens added 139 yards on 29 carries for Tanner.
