Bedford is bad news, unless he has a financial stake in it, he kills it.
The big news here is that Little and Bedford disagree on something. You can usually find them under the same rock.
Texting while driving SHOULD be a primary offense. How are we ever going to get people, especially young people, to stop this dangerous practice if it's not illegal. A lady lost her life last month because this guy was not paying attention to the road. We are out of control with not paying attention to the road. If a relative dies, I would expect a CALL, NOT A TEXT. A call is much safer to take and if it's an economic issue, then don't answer until you get somewhere where you can text but don't text while driving. And, limit calls while driving as well. While most of us can talk just fine and not be distracted, I see a lot of people who can't even talk and pay attention so really that's dangerous too. Hey, we used to have to wait until we got home to get important messages. It wouldn't be the end of the world if we still had to do that. I mean really, I use my cell as much as the next person but if it becomes illegal to use in any way while driving, I'll wait until I'm parked somewhere like I'll have to.
President Pro Tem Rodger Smitherman is a total idiot, almost any law they try to pass some baffoon wants to pull race into the issue.
I think the whole thing is crazy; just because it is non inforcable. Every article you read about this case it says "he may have been texting". There is just no way you can inforce this. And besides you pass this where do you stop? Lets ban radios while driving, crying babies in the back seat, eating, or anything while driving. You cannot legislate common sense.
This law would be easy to enforce. Your cell phone and your cell phone company will have records of your text messages and the times you text and read text messages. You can already be charged and convicted with this evidence. What the law will do is make everyone aware that it is illegal to drive with your attention on your cell phone, because you cannot pay attention to your driving at the same time. Let's hope Mr. Bedford does not kill a family while he is texting and driving, since he seems to be one of those idiots who thinks you can do both.
Total cell phone ban while driving period. It's simple and if it's profiling then be it! I call it safety.
I really don't know if Mr. Bedford is considered a state employee or not, but if he is, the State of Alabama has a policy expressly prohibiting reading messages, sending messages, surfing the web, or any other form of electronic data communication while driving a state vehicle. This includes sitting at a red light. You must pull to the side of the road, in a safe area, to do any of the above mentioned activities. Certainly hope he is not caught reading/sending a text if he is on the state payroll system. What an idiot! Someone has him in there back pocket on this one.
