It's not surprising that his salary is less than Saban's. We live in a state where football is revered and education is ranked somewhere behind NASCAR racing, hunting, being republican, eating fried food and church. If the people of this state would show even half as much support for educational accomplishments as they did for football, maybe we wouldn't be ranked almost LAST in every aspect of raising and educated our children.
AngieK, I guess this is the only state that pays a football coach what he is worth.
Maybe if we had teachers and administrators that had the intensity and drive of a football coach, we would not be LAST as you put it.
If the teachers and administrators worked under a system where they were FIRED for not producing results, maybe their pay would refiect their success of lack their of. But of course you cannot hide the fact that you are either a teacher or administrator because you seem to be scared the republicans will make hold accountable for doing your job. You paint a pretty broad stroke of negative remarks about the state. And the teachers associtation in this state is what has made education fall behind all of the other things you listed, not the taxpayers or a football coach.
Add to that AngieK, if the people who give all this money to football, would spend a third of that on students in this state, think how much better off we would be, but oh we couldnt go to wal mart and buy our RTR national championship shirts then.
What's your point? Who makes more money for the University? This is what the market requires.
They say it like its a bad thing !
Does he make as much as Mal Moore?
Nick Saban can convince 100,000 people to pay upwards of $100 to watch him do his job 7-8 times a year. That's why he is paid as much as he is. Secondly, most of Saban's pay comes from donations from boosters, not tax revenue like the university president's
Saban took a $1,000,000 pay cut to come to Alabama.
When you take a job for someone you should be able to make a profit for your employer, the amount of money you make for your employer should be less than the amount you're paid, otherwise you're an liability instead of an asset. Coach Saban has been a great asset to the University and I wish I could buy stock in him. If he makes more than the president so what, he's paying his way ten fold. Roll Tide!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Those who say it a bad thing, need to forget about it and get another subject to gripe about, and I have a good suggestion, Obumer, the president!!!!!!!!
So...what's your point. He does not generate the revenue for the University that Saban does. And I can guarantee you that he works less hours than Saban. His expenses are very likely 10X that of the football coach. Really, what has one got to do with the other. Some people just like controversy.
So? He's probably worth half as much as his salary costs to the quality of the school. The football coach, on the other hand, does more for recruiting, donations, and alumni support than he could ever be paid. Let's see him prove otherwise. THEN push for a higher salary if he is worth it.
Hey C Are you that big of an idiot (I can tell you are by the way). "The teachers association has made Alabama schools fall behind" What we need to do in the state to help education is raise teachers salaries, haven't had one in 5 years, raise property taxes, Alabama has the lowest property taxes in the US by the way, and take that extra money and give it to education. Oh and by the way most teachers do their jobs, there is only a small percentage of teachers who do a poor job. All of our sorry republican politicians in the this state have done is try and destroy our educational system
IT'S FUNNY TO ME THAT JUST A FEW SHORT YEARS AGO WHEN SABAN WAS AT LSU , BAMA FANS HATED HIM BUT NOW THEY ARE A BUNCH OF SABAN NUT HUGGERS
Coach Saban's $245K is a bargain Angie K and the balance of his $5.6 income isn't taking one penny from the schools. If the US Treasury set up their money printing presses in Tuscaloosa they couldn't print enough money to satisfy the appetite of the schools addiction to money. And do you really believe a graduating senior in the IB program at DHS is less educated than any other public school in America.
Joyce I agree totally with your comment.....bahahahaha
When the president starts hosting events on Saturdays that brings in 100,000+ people, generating millions of dollars for the university, then his pay should be increased.
Alabama, the school, received MILLIONS in payout from the athletic department.
Angie, jealousy and ignorance of basic Economics is no excuse for some of your, and other, comments here. Saban has more than earned his money with increased ticket sales and booster-giving. Paying teachers (or anyone else) more in order to make them more productive (without incentives) is not logical thinking. The only way that would help would be to entice better candidates to the profession, which would mean that some of the present teachers would be out of a job, except they can't be "let go" in order to hire better teachers! No sense in that argument. Jealousy is a bad thing to allow into one's thinking. Paying a university President more just because he has a title is nonsense, regardless of which school you are talking about. It's about responsibilities and productivity. No one has even mentioned how much Saban gives back to the school (which probably makes him in the top 10% of all donors). Do you ever remember anyone caring about a bakery in Northport putting "A's" on their cupcakes before Saban put Bama back on top??? Of course not. It's about making money for the University! Football fan, or not, he is making Bama a ton of money at the present; money that is spent on ALL the students.
The Auburn folks on here bashing him would trade Chiznic for him in a New York second.
You people are funny. People around here pick a team to support at random, with no ties to it other than the fact the school is based in the state and then declare your undying support to it for life. You probably never attended the school, have no family that went there, and display an inordinate amount of pride in the fact that a bunch of strangers playing for the team can win games. The wins make headlines and football is talked about year round. But where are the headlines when a school has a great scholastic achievement?
I just find it sad that not only Alabama, but other states as well, have this type of mentality about sports.
And no, I have nothing to do with the education system in this state, I don't even have children in it.
Can he do for Alabama's academics & administration what Nick's done for the football team?
To Joyce and Beth - everyone hates a winner, now we have him so we are winners. Why wouldn't we like him? Funny how Auburn folks are dogging there own coach. To quote Beth: bahahaha!
To Angie - The Alabama football team is second in the nation for having the most players graduate, right behind stanford. How about that for academic achievement. Secondly, I graduated from Alabama, but it is rude to tell someone they couldn't be a fan because they didn't get a dipolma from there. What if they couldn't afford to go, but they enjoy watching them play. Do I need to live in the state of Tennessee to be a Titians fan? What is your criteria for that? Also, Alabama's debate team has won over 17 national titles - beating out Harvard and other Ivy Leagues. They won one just this last year. There journalism department won the top award at Columbia University this year for their newspaper.
Maybe you should do some research before you start hating on Alabama.
P.S. All SEC Coaches make more then their Presidents. I believe Vanderbilt is one of the top 25 schools in the country academically. I know their medical school is ranked 15th. Come on Angie, let's get on a debate here with some facts....bring it?
Hey C Are you that big of an idiot (I can tell you are by the way). "The teachers association has made Alabama schools fall behind" What we need to do in the state to help education is raise teachers salaries, haven't had one in 5 years, raise property taxes, Alabama has the lowest property taxes in the US by the way, and take that extra money and give it to education. See the problem with your comments is that you do not really know what a "doing a good job" really means.
Like the old saying goes "Those that can, do. Those that can't, teach". Seems to fit pretty good in your case.
There are some very good teachers in the Alabama school system, the problem is the bad ones spoil the entire lot like a rotten apple in a barrel of good apples.
If we gave every teacher a raise and then raised property taxes, wouldn't that just negate the extra income from property taxes every year?
Again Ralph, you miss the point. How many headlines and fans does the debate team have? How many articles have been written about the journalism department? I'm sure they merited a small paragraph somewhere, but in the state of Alabama, football is all that matters, and I find that shameful and a sad reflection of the intelligence of the majority of the residents of this state.
Sorry you didn't get the point from the beginning, but really, I'm not surprised. Ignorance is rampant here.
YOU CAN REALLY TELL OLE RALPH IS A SABAN NUT HUGGER AND HE'S SOOOO SMART ..
God help us...
I love the see the JEALOUSLY from the auburn fans! Funny!
Hey Joyce you have a phetish for nuts or something? Hey C thank a teacher if you can do and get off the blame teachers not parents band wagon!
Seems it is very easy to tell who are the teachers on here. I'm not blaming them for anything. I'm just pointing out that they are not the saviors of the free world. And yes parents are the biggest blame. But don't make the parents a scape goat for not being competitive with the private sector or a football coach in productivity. And yes, there can be productivity in teaching. Just look at the successful private schools.
And I'm so proud of the Chicago teachers for going on strike. I'm sure they are teaching some valuable lessons.
AngieK, when was the last time you went to a debate team event, then called the newspaper yourself to let them know of the event and the outcome. And if you feel journalism deserves covering, talk to the very people that publish this newspaper. I'll bet there are more journalist that work at the DD than star football players. But then again they have to make a living and football coverage pays the bills.
