Vote 'no' on Amendment 6

We recommend a "no" vote on Amendment 6, which will be on the ballot Nov. 6.

The proposed amendment to the state constitution, a reaction to the Affordable Care Act, purports "to prohibit any person or health care provider from being compelled to participate in any health care system."

The Affordable Care Act mandates that most people purchase health insurance if they do not already have it. This requirement is what allows the law to, among other things, require affordable coverage of pre-existing conditions. The mandate was proposed by the Heritage Foundation and conservatives like Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney, all of whom changed their minds when President Barack Obama embraced the idea.

Even for those who oppose the Affordable Care Act, Amendment 6 is a bad idea.

Alabama has spent a great deal of time and money in court during the past two years pretending state law trumps federal law. It does not. The likely result of passing Amendment 6 is that our tax dollars will once again be wasted on lawyers who will, once again, discover the Supremacy Clause of the U.S. Constitution.

Congress knows most Alabamians do not like the health-care law. Passing an amendment that will waste more money on futile litigation is an expensive way to communicate a message we already have sent.

Despite widespread hostility toward the Affordable Care Act, scheduled to take full effect in 2014, we are convinced it will be good for Alabama.

It will address the near-monopoly held by Blue Cross Blue Shield, which pushes premiums up, especially on individual policies. It will make Alabamians less dependent on their employers for health insurance. The law also will provide access to health care for most of the state's 681,000 uninsured citizens, including the 36,000 in Morgan, Limestone and Lawrence counties.

The Affordable Care Act will strengthen our hospitals and other health-care providers. By increasing access to preventive care, it will decrease inefficient visits to emergency rooms. It will nearly eliminate the losses hospitals incur when they are required to treat uninsured visitors to emergency rooms.

The law accomplishes all this while decreasing the federal deficit.

Whether you oppose or favor the Affordable Care Act, we recommend a "no" vote on Amendment 6.

There are some of us who do not trust the hidden passages or laws in the health care package. We don't want to be tricked into something they keep secret from us but is slowly coming to life. Not good. Yes on amendment.

Why is so hard for you people to understand that this whole thing is about states rights? What's good for one state is not good for inanities. VOTE YES ON 6! Thanks DD for helping me make up my mind.

That should have said another.

Another "feel good" law which, if passed,( and it will pass) will be challenged as being unconstitutional and after millions of dollars in legal fees be declared just that: unconstitutional. This from a state which is rapidly headed for bankruptcy and a sure enough Federal takeover. We cannot afford to continue to enact these laws we know are worth less than the paper they're written on. Vote no and save us another expensive series of law suits!

a vote yes will just mean more money waisted going to law suits. I am going to vote NO.

VOTE "YES,YES,YES,YES,YES" ON AMENDMENT 6!!

Well said, Joe from Falkville.

By the time all the exemptions and states are excluded from the sick-care law, only the true schmucks will be paying for everyone else. Get educated, good grief... http://www.heritage.org/research/projects/impact-of-obamacare

It is not up to the Fed to determine whether or not I have healthcare. My $20k I pay in taxes a year are enough... I see no need to redistribute MORE of my income to the LAZY and TRIFLING..

So I will recommend to my friends, family and coworkers to vote yes to this amendment, as I recommend to them to vote Obama out of office.

Carol and Roy. Why is it so hard for you to see that the whole thing is aboutmaking more money for lawyers and judges? The legislature cares about NOTHING ELSE!!

I'm Pro Life. So, I'm voting NO!

VOTE YES!!

"Despite widespread hostility toward the Affordable Care Act, scheduled to take full effect in 2014, we are convinced it will be good for Alabama" Exactly, this is the reason the Daily remains out of touch with the communities it serves. There is widespread rejection of the federal government taking over such an important part of our lives as our private health care decisions, period. Instead of taking the capitalist, free enterprise approach, (you would be seen as caving to conservatives), you support the collectivist, socialist approach, as usual. To stop the monopoly, introduce competition. Government should NOT be competition since it serves as regulator, taxing authority, and represents the special interests of the collectivist thought ensconced in bureaucracy at all levels. Introduce competition across state lines for medical insurance. Stop seeing all our problems as nails and the only tool to deal with them is the government hammer. Bigger government is not the answer to any of our current problems, even in education. By consistently being anti-conservative, you have refused to publish the common sense solutions that work in 70% of your readers lives. Obamacare is bad at all levels for our economy, our lives, and our health. Rejection at every level is a necessity until repeal or defunding is achieved.

YES -Amendment 6 - OBAMA Health Care Opt Out - Would prohibit mandatory participation in any OBAMA Federal health care system.

This amendment has the purpose of challenging the overreaching Obama care and gives citizens legal authority to legal opt out of mandatory Obama Health Care. A Yes votes is an anti-Obama Vote http://ccofal.org
