Wal-Mart workers target Alabama stores for strike

MOBILE (AP) — Alabama stores are among the locations being targeted in a Black Friday strike by Wal-Mart workers.

AL.com reports the planned strike includes 55 Wal-Mart and Sam's Club stores in Alabama. A website set up by organizers includes stores in Birmingham, Huntsville, Mobile, Montgomery and others.

Only the Wal-Mart in the Birmingham suburb of Pelham has a strike leader name and lists a time when the walk-out will begin.

The protest is being planned by the Organization United for Respect at Wal-Mart, a subset of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union.

Wal-Mart employees across the country have complained about the stores opening at 8 a.m. on Thanksgiving day.

Federal labor officials Monday said they're trying to decide whether to support the company's request to intervene.

"Federal Labor officials", give me a break, Barry will give them no option, they must intervene.

Thomas, Obama will support unions and unionizing efforts to ewnds of the earth and to the death of commerce!

If they strike here I have a solution . . . shop Target

I typically am against any union activity, however I'll admit I agree with these workers that Walmart needs to CLOSE THEIR STORES on Holidays! I know it's tough to walk out on a job but sometimes you have to. People will spend their money on Friday just as fast as they would on Thursday, probably even faster.

Maybe a more fair solution would be to poll workers at individual locations and see if there are "volunteers" who would be willing to work on Thanksgiving. If an adequate staff can be scheduled, then open that particular store . . even if just for 8 hours. WalMart has business, shoppers get to shop and the workers benefit from holiday pay.

If shopper would think of anyone but themselves, they would stay at home. If there is no shoppers Walmart will think twice before pulling this crap again... if Thanksgiving sales are good this year, they will never close their doors again for any holiday... Walmart is very unfair to their workers but most have no choice but to work there in silence...

If there is anyone left who cares for their fellow man, they will stay home from all these stores opening at 8p.m. I know Sears in one..

I would think Sam would roll over in his grave if he knew of this....

Not everybody closes for the holidays. I work at a plant and we are having to work on every holiday. Just because you work on the hollidays does not mean that your employer does not care about you. My employer is very good to us and we are very well taken care of. I bet none of the people that are against walmart being opened has never ran to the grocery store, gas store or a big box store on a holiday.

Shop small and local!

If the unions want to make a stink about something, then how about taking a stand against everything that is "Made in China". Get American back to work.

To Decatur: Agreed, product made overseas is a result of American CEO & stockholder greed. Notice that overseas production rarely results in a lower price, just higher profits. This is aside from the main issue though. The retail (low paid) workers would rather have the day off. Most plant workers cannot get off due to the costs attributed to stopping & restarting production lines. Totally different issues......

Unions suck and so does wal-mart, so hmmmmmm I'm outraged!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Well, I won't be shopping at any of our fine department stores on Thanksgiving day. The holidays are not holidays anymore.................big business and a bad economy have taken a toll on holidays. Stores display holiday items and decorations so far ahead of time to not be outdone by another retail competitor that I'm tired of seeing it before the holiday even arrives. There is no meaning in any of it anymore. It's money, money, money.

To all you Walmart workers complaining. Go find somewhere else to work! There are plenty of people in Obama's economy that don't mind working a holiday... I don't... Been doing it for over a decade.

Carol, I agree with you! People who have a job should be thankful and not complain. If they don't want to work, there are plenty of others who would gladly step in and work for their paycheck! It's the 21st century, people...everybody's open on holidays now. What I love are the people who come into the stores on Thanksgiving and say "Oh, it's awful they're making you work today"...Duh! They wouldn't HAVE to work if everyone stayed home!!

Greed is good!!!!!! It is the only motivator that does not discriminate against anyone!!! If these "greedy" capitalist would do as some suggest here, unemployment would be higher, cost of goods would be higher. I would like to see your home where everything is made in America.

If a "greedy" capitalist has to compete with competition from all over the world, while fighting more regulation, higher taxes, and higher labor costs in America, how can they compete selling the exact same product? They can’t. So you have to START using their brain, to make the product better and cheaper, if they can’t compete all jobs would be lost. Why does John Deere use Yanmar diesels? Because they can make their tractor cheaper and higher quality, equals selling more tractors, which equals having more workers employed to build the higher number of units. If they used American motors, the motor would cost more, their tractor would cost more, they would sell less of them and have less employees building them. The brain is the only way to keep jobs in America, and it has nothing to do with a government sponsored public education.

Greed is good!! It is the only way capitalism can work. Greed motivates businesses and consumers to spend and save money morally and ethically!!!!! You are not being greedy when you break the law and steal from others, because you are harming yourself while doing so, which by definition would not be greed. To demonize greed is to champion statism, collectivism, socialism, and communism.
