Whitten pitches Red Raiders to win

Drake Whitten hurled a gem, striking out three while giving up two runs as Decatur High beat Trinity 4-3 Friday afternoon at Montgomery’s Paterson Field in the FCA tournament.

Trinity is the defending Class 3A state champion.

Decatur scored the go-ahead run in the top of the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly from Harold Blades.

Will Gann led Decatur (4-4) at the plate with two hits and an RBI, while Quintin Dupper finished 2-for-3. Jackson Fite, Mitch Davidson and Tanner Burns all added one hit each.

Link Burns got the save, striking out two in the seventh inning.

Wetumpka 10, Decatur 0: The Red Raiders had three players combine for six hits in the loss.

William Woller, Dupper and Fite had two hits each.

Decatur plays St. James today in Montgomery.

Clements 9-1, Westminster Christian 2-2: Seth Hamilton got the pitching win in Game 1, striking out five in six innings and allowing four hits and one earned run.

Hayden Russell led the Colts with two runs scored, while Cody Baucom and Hamilton finished with one run each.

Clay Russell, Cole White, Caleb Sherrill, Baucom and Jacob Schmidt added RBIs.

In Game 2, Westminster Christian scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning to take the win.

Hamilton put Clements on the board with one run on two hits.

The Colts (8-3) visit Elkmont for a doubleheader today.

Athens Bible 14, Brewer 2: Carter Corneil got the pitching win for the Class 1A No. 2 Trojans, and struck out four batters in four innings. Corneil allowed three hits, two walks and two earned runs before Jacob Hagewood pitched in relief.

Sam Bobo, Cole Graviett, Drew Ogles and Hagewood all recorded three singles in the win. Blake Cundiff and Jeb Hagewood also recorded singles.

Brewer was led by Weston Pritchett, who finished with a double. Austin Bentley and Jake Allen added singles in the loss.

Athens Bible (8-0) visits Waterloo on Monday.

Lindsay Lane Christian 28, Clay County 1: Sammy London led from the plate with two grand slams and 11 RBIs. Brandon Joyce finished with five runs scored. Connor Holland and Samuel Clemons added RBIs in the win, while London got the pitching win.

Lindsay Lane (1-1) hosts Tabernacle on Monday.

Softball

Lawrence County 10, Fort Payne 0: Tori McDaniel hit a home run and added three RBIs to help Lawrence County softball shut out Fort Payne in the Wallace State Invitational on Friday night.

Victoria Draper finished with two singles and an RBI, while Katie Burton doubled, and Whitney Woodard and Whitney White each added two singles in the win.

Anna Beth Franks got the pitching win, allowing two hits and striking out two.

Lawrence County (6-3-1) returns to the tournament today against Oneonta.

Lawrence County 3, Good Hope 1: Draper led the Red Devils with three hits in the Wallace State Invitational. Ashton Malcom had one hit to tie the game, while Kassidy Wise added the game-winning double.

Malcom got the pitching win, scattering four hits in the game.

Austin 6, Pinson Valley 3: Anna Leigh Mitchell pitched a complete game for the Black Bears, allowing five hits and two earned runs.

Aleah Garth hit a two-run home run in the Wallace State Invitational game, and Sydney Dishman added a home run and a single.

Mallory Malone and Mariah Campbell each finished with an RBI-double, while Raven Wade added a double and a single.

Austin (3-1) continues tournament play at 8 a.m. today.

Austin 8, Fairview 1: Courtney McClesky struck out six, allowing one earned run and four hits in the Wallace State Invitational.

Mitchell had a strong game for the Black Bears, hitting a two-RBI triple, an RBI-double and a single. Malone finished with a two-RBI double and a single, while Wade hit two singles with one RBI.

Addi McNutt contributed two hits with an RBI, while Campbell added an RBI-double, and Laiken Page doubled.

Lindsay Lane Christian 15, Clay County 11: Joyce DeWitt hit an inside-the-park home run to lead the Lions, while Dasha London went 2-for-3.

Randi Beth Holland got the pitching win.

Lindsay Lane (1-1) visits Tabernacle on Monday.

West Morgan 7, Grissom 1: Hannah Draper homered, Sydney Sanders had two hits and an RBI, and Alexis Casteel recorded six strikeouts over four innings and West Morgan got a win at the Wallace State Invitational.

Briley Stephenson and Haley Keaty each added RBI hits for the Rebels (4-7-1). Draper finished with two RBIs.

Soccer

Decatur boys 2, Hartselle 2: Hayden Hatfield and Carlos Carbajal both scored goals in the tie game.

Jackson Walraven finished with an assist for the Red Raiders in the game played at Hartselle.

Decatur (4-3-2) hosts Florence on Thursday.

Tennis

Hartselle girls 9, West Point 0: Hartselle picked up six wins in singles play and three in doubles play in the section-opening match for both squads.

Elizabeth Connell, Nicholle Smith, Julia Holladay, Katie Beth Bole, Jordan Barbrey and Ivana Ellis all picked up singles wins.

Teams of Connell-Smith, Bole-Barbrey and Holladay-Ellis closed out the sweep with wins in doubles.
