Woman dies 3 days after fall at nursing home
By Lucy Berry

A 94-year-old Decatur woman died today after being injured earlier this week when her wheelchair rolled downhill outside a nursing home.

Elizabeth Street died at Decatur Morgan Hospital Decatur General Campus. Morgan County Coroner Jeff Chunn said she died shortly after midnight.

Morgan County 911 Director Ryan Welty said a Decatur EMS ambulance and Decatur Fire and Rescue Engine were dispatched to a 1:30 p.m. call Wednesday about a woman falling into a ditch with water in it at Country Cottage Assisted Living on 2515 Old Moulton Road S.W.

Decatur Fire Chief Darwin Clark said the nursing home was apparently conducting a fire drill at the time. According to an incident report, firefighters arrived to find the woman in a caregiver’s arms.

The woman had been outside in her wheelchair for the fire drill. The caregiver told responders that she came outside and discovered the woman had rolled down a hill and landed in a ditch full of water.

The woman had abrasions and cuts to her arms and legs, and water and grime on her face, the report said.

Roselawn Funeral Home at 741 Danville Road S.W. is handling funeral arrangements.

What was the cause of death? Aspiration, pneumonia? State reportable incident......may have Country Cottage shut down by the state!!!

should not the wheelchair wheels been locked?

there is no excuse for this, poor poor lady.

wow... she was 94... Hang on granny!!!!!

@ Jimmy....when Country Cottage was doing the fire drill, a worker should have been outside with the residents while another worker cleared the building.....sounds like a lawsuit to me!!! Prayers for this family!

the home is responsible for their care & it looks like a full creek beside the building, also that place is too close to a busy street to be letting the elderly go unattended. wow. that whole situation screams lawsuit.
