BP plans to sell its Decatur facility to Indorama, owner of AlphaPET. Both plants are situated on Finley Island Road.

The plant manager for AlphaPET, which is owned by the company that plans to buy the BP plant here, said BP’s 440 employees will keep their jobs when the sale becomes final.

Yashwant Awasthi, vice president of operations for AlphaPET, said today that BP’s 444 Decatur employees will join AlphaPET’s 125 employees when Indorama Ventures PLC of Bangkok, Thailand, buys the plant.

“It’s like a bigger family for us,” Awasthi said.

AlphaPET, which is owned by Indorama, is a BP customer and its plant is located on BP’s property on Finley Island Road. The BP plant makes a raw material that is used to make polyester to be used in such things as plastic bottles, sheets and television screens.

BP announced Wednesday that it plans to sell the plant to Indorama at an undisclosed price.
