A Decatur man was charged with third-degree burglary today following an early-morning attempt to steal cigarettes from a local gas station, police said.
Police responded to a business alarm and found the front door shattered at Fuel Zone, 101 Sixth Ave., around 2:30 a.m., according to a release from Det. Timothy Jackson of Decatur's Property Crimes Unit. The owner of the business also responded to the alarm and confirmed that several boxes of cigarettes were missing from inside the store.
Officers located Rodney Dudley Brown, 49, 638 E. Moulton St., at a nearby gas station after the alarm. Brown had been seen near Fuel Zone before the alarm, officers said.
Officers said they found cigarettes that Brown had hidden at the second gas station. The owner of Fuel Zone identified the cigarettes as the ones missing from his store and Brown was taken to Decatur City Jail where he was booked on a charge of third-degree burglary, Jackson said.
He was later transferred to Morgan County Jail where he was being held with bail set at $2,500.
