A 1-year-old died and another child and an adult were hospitalized after a single-vehicle wreck this morning at the intersection of Ipsco and Woodall roads in Decatur, according to state troopers.

Karla Gabriela Barrera, 22, of Decatur, was driving a Chevrolet Malibu on Ipsco Road 3 miles east of Trinity, troopers said, and the vehicle left the roadway at the intersection. The car struck a tree, overturned and caught fire, troopers said.

"Barrera and an 8-year-old child were removed from the vehicle, but the infant was pronounced dead at the scene," senior trooper Chuck Daniel said in a statement.

Barrera was airlifted to UAB Hospital in Birmingham, and the 8-year-old was transported to a local hospital, Daniel said.

Daniel said the crash occurred at 8:19 a.m.
