DECATUR — A celebration of life for Charles Thomas Maples, Jr., 78, will be held Saturday, June 29th at the Decatur First Presbyterian Church, 701 Oak Street. Visitation begins at 9:30 a.m., a memorial service at 10:30. Charles died at home on May 30th.

Charles was born in Fairfield, AL to Alfie and Charles T. Maples, Sr. After attending the Naval Academy, Charles earned a Master of Arts from Samford University and a Ph.D. in History from the University of Alabama. He served as Dean of Students at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. Later, he became an independent businessman and college history teacher.

Charles was a Scoutmaster, a genealogist, a nature lover and a friend to animals. He is survived by his wife, Roselyn; his son, Tom; his daughter, Claire Maples Edwards and her two children; and his sister, Dorothy Woodsides of Sandy Springs, GA.

In lieu of flowers, Charles would be honored by a donation to First Presbyterian Church Decatur, in his name.
