@Matt McWilliams, on the contrary Ms. Lansing has posted facts which simply do not show you in a good light (showing up at horse shows with some scarred up legs on your walkers, were we?) The compliance rate you are touting is bogus as it includes flat shod horses who are shown multiple times, along with the less frequently shown big lick horses (Ms. Lansing uses the term "stacked" which I also favor as the euphemistic "pads" gives the impression that they are therapeutic and nothing could be further than the truth). I applaud the paper for asking the opinion of the public about whether they want to have this show in their back yard. The ongoing soring and abuse of these gentle animals is a national disgrace. It must end.

The testimony of a few "independent" vets pales in comparison to the American Association of Equine Practioners, the American Veterinary Medical Association and EVERY state veterinary association in the country who support the elimination of stacks, chains and ultra heavy shoes that are needed to create the freakish movement called the Big Lick. The PAST ACT amendment to the Horse Protection Act (1970) that had 308 House cosponsors and 60 Senate cosponsors was held off the floor by an unknown senator in a last minute effort to kill the bill when the 113th Congress ended. But rest assured it will be introduced again because its the right thing to do.

Decatur must decide whether or not they wish to host a "freak" show called the WHTA Trainers show.

The show has given charity a mass amount of money each year. Have those opposed to it put in one dime to replace the money lost to the children?
The compliance rate by the USDA last year for the industry was extremely high for the entire industry (90+%). You must realize the agenda of the H$U$ to make all horses companion animals, take away bits, do away with shoes, and have them all run free.(Oh by the way they tried that and starved a whole herd) We should immediately shut down major league baseball as a few use steroids. We should immediately shut down National Football league because they have continually over years caused brain damage. We should immediately ban all NASCAR racing in Alabama as some cheat with engines, set up and questionable race driving. Its time those that want to oppose charity money makers to put their money where there mouth is.

This paper put out an article that was biased against the Walking Horse and then asked people to vote in a poll based on the information they provided in the article. They didn’t mention that an independent vet said over 70% of horses turned down by the USDA was not in violation of the HPA. At the latest DQP training clinic Dr. Jeff Baker admitted the proper procedures were not followed when inspecting horses and horses were found in violation of the HPA that were in truth were not in violation.

Thank you for bringing up situations with an old trainer of mine. Your comments show you know very little if anything about the equipment or training of performance horses (your reference to"stacks"). It shows you have bought into the H$U$ line and know nothing about even the USDA's compliance numbers. Because you have no facts on your side you revert to attacking individuals. You didnt mention that this week a USDA VMO lost a lawsuit against him for abusing a horse in the inspection process (video taped) and the owner of the horse was awarded $250,000.00 You didnt mention that Whitfield that introduced the Past Act is under investigation by the Ethics Committee for several violations concerning the Past Act and his wife (a H$U$ lobbist) influence. You didnt mention that the H$U$ is having problems finding someone else to introduce the Past Act again. Of course you didnt mention that the top VMO for the USDA admitted that the proper procedures for inspections had not been followed since 2009. My question is very simple. HOW MUCH MONEY DID YOU PERSONALLY CONTRIBUTE TO THE CHARITY? HOW MUCH MONEY DID YOUR "GROUP" CONTRIBUTE TO THE CHARITY?

Grace Collins

SOP is for industry supporters to post as many deflections from the issue as possible. You seem to be the only one who knows about an alleged lawsuit against a USDA VMO that awarded $250,000 to some owner.. If you can't provide documentation then this is just one more attempt to cloud the issue of soring.

Cynthia Lansing

Mr. McWilliams, thank you for posting the landmark news of the USDA case. I am interested in reading the court's opinion. If you could state the name of the case & the case citation, that would be great. Was this a Court of Appeals decision and, if so, in what Circuit was the case decided? For example, 6th Circuit, 8th Circuit, et cetera. Thank you in advance.

Linda Bassel

Mr. McWilliams, please provide a link with some documentation of your claims about the USDA and the VMOs. I would be interested to see it.
