New free throw procedures and foul rules for high school basketball could impact game strategy and alter the balance of competition, according to local coaches.
CULLMAN — Decatur Heritage’s Genie McGhee wrapped up a successful weekend at the AHSAA Class 1A-3A Outdoor State Track and Field Championships on Saturday, winning a pair of individual titles to bring her total to three over two days.
With its postseason hanging in the balance after a close loss in the Class 7A, Area 8 tournament on Tuesday, the Austin softball team rebounded to win three straight elimination games on Wednesday to capture the area championship and advance to next week’s North Regional in Huntsville.
The high school soccer playoffs start Thursday night. The state championships are decided May 11-13 at John Hunt Park in Huntsville.
Area tournaments begin play Monday for several local teams. The top two teams from each area advance to the North Regional in Florence on May 9-12. The top two teams from each regional advance to the state tournament to be played May 16-20 at Choccolocco Park in Oxford.

The Hartselle boys and girls tennis teams will be playing for Class 6A state championships in Mobile next week after securing runners-up finishes at the Section 7 tournament at Point Mallard.

CULLMAN — Gracie Lawrence pitched a three-hit shutout for Brewer on Saturday as the Patriots defeated Albertville 8-0 at the Cullman Tournament. Lawrence allowed just three singles and no walks while striking out five, throwing 45 of 67 pitches for strikes.
