The West Morgan Rebels have new head coaches for football and basketball.
On Thursday the Morgan County Board of Education approved the hiring of Mikel Riggs as West Morgan’s football coach. Justin Henley is the Rebels’ new basketball coach.
Riggs comes to Class 3A West Morgan from Leeds, where he served as offensive coordinator. He was previously offensive coordinator at T.R. Miller in Brewton for his father, Jamie Riggs, who is the third winningest high school coach in the state with 293 wins and four state championships.
Henley comes to West Morgan from Cleveland in Blount County where he coached the Class 2A Panthers. Henley is a native of Hatton.
Riggs replaces John Ritter, who left to take the head coaching position at Class 5A Russellville. Ritter coached the Rebels for three seasons. After a 0-10 record in his first season, the Rebels went 7-4 and 10-2 with two playoff appearances.
Henley takes over the basketball program from Sam Wallace, who was head coach for the last two seasons. Wallace had been an assistant coach and moved up to head coach when Sam Brown left for Decatur in 2016.
